performance with sugar cubes and champagne
NotE to Self – TAC Eindhoven (2016)
For this performance at the opening of the NotE to Self exhibition by Nanne op ‘t Ende, I revisit works like Marianne Kallipygos and #5. Standing on a sugar cube pedestal I strike a number of poses inspired by classical statues like Venus Kallipygos and Venus Genetrix, and by a photograph of the artist that has a prominent place in the exhibition. I start drinking champagne in between poses and as the performance progresses, I drench myself with it. Struggling to keep my balance on the slowly crumbling pedestal, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain the classical ideal of beauty.
