In my previous work the life-size Barbie had been a perfect character for a role play with stereotypes and identities. Perhaps she had been fulfilling her part as a symbol for unrealistic expectations for long enough when I had the idea for the BBQ (read: Barbiecue). A marshmallow Barbie is put on a spit and roasted over an open fire in a performance that refers to a primordial version of the communion. Funny and tasty for sure, but associations with torture and cannibalism turn the event into a much more ambiguous experience. Ultimately, the BBQ is a sacrifice for an end to all violence.
